Wavecrest Announces Direct Mobile Airtime Transfer Interconnect with Ethio Telecom

Wavecrest, a leading Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS) organisation, announced the addition of a direct Mobile Airtime Transfer (MAT) interconnection with Ethio Telecom. This new development builds on the success of the existing direct voice interconnection announced with Ethio Telecom in April 2022.

“This enhanced partnership with Ethio Telecom enables us to offer both our business clients and consumers of our hosted app products the best quality Mobile Airtime Top-up experience to Ethiopia. And it continues our commitment to delivering best-in-class connections across Africa through building direct partnership models with Mobile Operators” said Daniel Rodrigues, Managing Director, Wavecrest.

This new interconnection will help diaspora communities around the world top up their loved ones' mobile airtime, ensuring that they are always able to contact people in Ethiopia. Continuous massive expatriation has formed a worldwide Ethiopian diaspora of around two million people. For instance, although there is no recent census data, it’s estimated that a million live in the US, with about 250,000 having settled across Washington DC, Virginia and Maryland. And in the UK in January 2023, over half of the Ethiopian population in the UK made use of Wavecrest’s app-based services to make calls to Ethiopia.
